Amazing images. The TIME & Bloomberg Businessweek cover photos were both taken by Scott Olson (Getty Images) who was arrested by the St. Louis PD during the protests and later released. The New Yorker painting was done by New York artist Eric Drooker.
The lidérc (also known as lüdérc, lúdvérc, lederc, lidroc, lidröc, inglice) is born when its owner hatches a black chicken’s egg by holding it under their armpit. It’s a familiar spirit which makes its owner rich overnight and may grant other wishes. In exchange for its services, it takes on whatever human shape their owner desires at night, but instead of having sex, it sucks the owner’s blood and sits on their chest in their sleep, causing nightmares (lidérces álom.) Albeit useful, the lidérc is nonetheless considered a malicious creature.
It can also appear in the form of fire, hence the Hungarian term ‘lidérc light’ for will-o’-the-wisp.
